Guide / Route and entrance

Where do you enter, and what is the visiting route?

Locate the Doge’s Palace public entrance at Porta del Frumento and plan the courtyard, state-room and prison route.

The short answer

The public entrance is Porta del Frumento on Piazzetta San Marco, on the palace’s waterfront side. Start there rather than at the ceremonial Porta della Carta beside the basilica. Inside, follow the signed museum itinerary through the courtyard and state rooms; the prison route and specialised tours have different access conditions.

Plan your Doge’s Palace visit

Finding Porta del Frumento

The palace stands next to St Mark’s Basilica, but the two attractions do not share their normal entrance or admission. From the square, walk into the Piazzetta towards the waterfront and look for the palace’s public entrance. The museum address is San Marco 1, Venice.

Porta della Carta is the ornate historic gateway between the palace and the basilica. It is an important architectural feature, but heading straight to it because it looks ceremonial can leave you at the wrong place for normal admission. Tour meeting points can differ from the public entrance; follow your booking instructions.

Allow for security and bag arrangements

Prebooking does not remove checks at the entrance. Have your ticket available and keep any required identification easy to reach. A phone ticket is only useful if the screen can be opened when asked, so consider downloading it before leaving your accommodation.

The museum does not permit suitcases, trolleys or bulky luggage in the museum areas. Do not assume the cloakroom will accept travel luggage: the museum asks visitors to leave it elsewhere before arrival. Smaller bags and umbrellas can be directed to the cloakroom by security staff.

A practical way to understand the main itinerary

Use the courtyard to establish the building’s scale, then follow the signed route through the palace interiors. The Golden Staircase and institutional chambers explain how the Doge’s residence sat beside the Republic’s working government. The Great Council Chamber is a major highlight, not the only room worth stopping in.

The museum connects judicial rooms with the Bridge of Sighs and New Prisons on the normal visitor itinerary, subject to current openings and access limitations. Follow staff directions rather than trying to impose a fixed room order from an old map. Restoration, exhibitions and visitor management can alter circulation.

Adapt the route to your group

If you have limited time, prioritise the courtyard, a selection of council rooms and the Great Council Chamber rather than reading every label. If someone needs step-free access, plan with the museum: the prison and armoury areas are not accessible, even though the regular visit is described as accessible.

Secret Itineraries is a reserved guided route through additional administrative and older prison spaces. It is not an optional corridor that you can add spontaneously during a standard self-guided visit. Choose it in advance if those spaces are central to your interests.

A first-visit sequence to use with the museum signs

Think in groups of spaces rather than trying to follow an inflexible shortcut. MUVE describes the second-floor institutional chambers before the first-floor Great Council rooms. The main visit is therefore not simply courtyard, staircase and immediately Paradise. Temporary works, crowd management and an accessible itinerary may change the path.

  1. At Porta del Frumento, confirm the correct ticket queue or your tour’s separate meeting point.
  2. In the courtyard, identify the Giants’ Staircase and the building’s different architectural sides; let staff direct you to the interior route.
  3. Follow the Golden Staircase and signed institutional rooms, including the reception and council chambers that interest you.
  4. Give the Great Council Chamber and Paradise their own viewing time rather than treating them as a corridor.
  5. Include the Bridge of Sighs and New Prisons only where the open route and your mobility allow; these are not the older cells of Secret Itineraries.

Avoid preventable interruptions

Ask about toilets and the accessible route before moving into the prison itinerary. Wear shoes with grip and bring a manageable day bag. MUVE prohibits beachwear or skimpy clothing, so do not interpret “not a church” as “no clothing rules.” If also visiting the basilica, check its separate dress and entry requirements.

The museum admission does not allow you to leave for a street café and then re-enter. Plan any outdoor break before entry or after completing the visit.

Questions answered

Frequently asked

Is the entrance the same as St Mark’s Basilica?

No. Doge’s Palace standard entry is at Porta del Frumento on Piazzetta San Marco. The basilica is a separate visit with its own entrance arrangements.

Can I cross the Bridge of Sighs from outside?

It is an enclosed passage within the museum’s visiting route, not a public pedestrian crossing. You can view its exterior from nearby public areas without entering the palace.

Can I store a suitcase at the palace?

Do not plan to. The museum asks visitors to leave suitcases, trolleys and bulky luggage elsewhere before arriving. Check the current bag notice for precise restrictions.
