Location
Where is the Doge’s Palace in Venice?
The Doge’s Palace stands at the southeastern corner of the San Marco area, where St. Mark’s Square opens onto the lagoon. Its address is San Marco 1.
- North
- St. Mark’s Basilica adjoins the palace. The ornate Porta della Carta between them is a ceremonial gateway, not the public entrance.
- West
- The Piazzetta San Marco runs from the square down to the water, along the palace’s long arcaded side.
- South
- The waterfront (the Molo and Riva degli Schiavoni). Visitors enter through the Porta del Frumento on this side.
- East
- Across the narrow Rio di Palazzo, the Bridge of Sighs links the palace to the New Prisons.
On foot
From Piazza San Marco, walk past the basilica front and turn toward the water along the Piazzetta. Keep the palace arcades on your left until you reach the waterfront side and the Porta del Frumento.
By vaporetto
Water buses stop at San Marco and along the Riva degli Schiavoni. Step ashore, face the palace across the waterfront promenade, and look for the entrance on its lagoon-facing facade.

Why it matters
More than a ducal residence
The doge lived here, but the palace was above all the working heart of the Venetian Republic. Councils met, laws were debated, ambassadors were received and judges heard cases under one roof, so walking its rooms is a lesson in how a city-state governed itself for centuries.
Outside, the Gothic facades of pale stone and patterned pink marble rest on open arcades, a deliberately light look for a seat of power. Inside, the tone changes: ceremonial chambers are covered with paintings by Tintoretto, Veronese and their workshops, designed to celebrate Venice and impress foreign visitors.
Justice was part of the building too. The standard route crosses the Bridge of Sighs to the New Prisons on the other side of the canal; the hidden offices and cells of the Secret Itineraries belong to a separate guided tour.
